Hiring for construction and the skilled trades

Last updated 7 October 2026 · By the Rezumz team

The short answer

To screen construction and trades candidates, check the trade qualification and site card or ticket the job needs, then the type of work they have done on similar projects, then availability and travel. Cards and licences must be verified with the issuing scheme or authority, because the CV only claims them.

Construction and trades hire for specific tickets, cards and licences, on projects that start at short notice. Candidates often have thin CVs and strong references. The process has to be quick, practical and exact about the credentials that legally or contractually matter.

What to look for on a CV

Trade qualification and licence

Look for the qualification or licence the trade needs, which varies by trade and by country or state. List the exact requirement in the job.

Site card or safety ticket

Many sites require a safety card or ticket. Note which the candidate holds and its expiry, and check it with the scheme.

Similar projects

Residential, commercial, civil and industrial work differ. Match the kind and scale of project.

Tools, plant and supervision

Experience with specific plant, and whether the person has supervised others, shapes the level.

Availability and travel

Start dates, site locations, travel and accommodation decide who can take the job.

Mistakes that cost you good candidates

  • Accepting a card or ticket on the CV's word instead of checking with the scheme.
  • Requiring a formal CV from people whose best evidence is references and finished work.
  • Not recording the ticket, expiry and check date, which matters on a site audit.
  • Waiting on a long process in a market where skilled people take the first good offer.

How Rezumz fits

01Apply page with ticket questions

Ask whether the candidate holds the required card, qualification and right to work. A required answer of no flags the candidate for review.

02A form for ticket details and references

Send a form asking for card type, number, expiry and two referees, and keep the answers on the record for your later check.

03Certifications in the match

Certifications mentioned on the CV are shown against the role's requirements, with the supporting line.

04Fast, recorded offers

Send an offer letter with approval and an online signature, so the start date and rate are in writing from day one.

What it doesn't do

  • Rezumz does not verify licences, registrations or certificates, and it does not run background, criminal-record or right-to-work checks. You do those through the official register or an approved provider.
  • It does not post jobs to job boards or schedule shifts. Candidates arrive through your own apply link, your CV inbox, uploads or a CSV import.
  • Rezumz does not run site inductions, track tickets after hire or manage subcontractor compliance.
  • It suits small and mid-sized contractors, not firms hiring hundreds of site workers at a time.

Checks and rules differ by country and change over time. Treat this page as a guide, not legal advice, and see the Trust Centre for how we handle data and what we do not have yet.

Questions

How do I verify a site safety card?

Use the card scheme's online checking service or the issuing body, and record the date. Rezumz stores the answers and your notes, but does not verify cards.

Can tradespeople apply without a polished CV?

Yes. The apply page asks for a CV, but your required questions and references can carry the decision for roles where the work speaks for itself.

Can I hire subcontractors with Rezumz?

You can send contractor offers and keep the record. Employment status rules differ, so take local advice on contractor and employee arrangements.
