Interview Questions to Ask a Store Manager Candidate

Questions that surface real evidence of P&L ownership and team performance, not just keeping the store running — plus what to actually listen for in the answer, not just whether they say the right buzzwords.

1. How do you build a weekly staff schedule that covers busy periods without blowing the labour budget?

What to listen for: Use of sales patterns, skills mix, availability and fairness, and adjusting during the week when demand changes.

2. A customer demands a refund outside policy and starts raising their voice on the shop floor. What do you do?

What to listen for: Calm tone, listening, moving the conversation aside, applying policy with flexibility where sensible, and protecting staff and other shoppers.

3. Stock counts show a pattern of missing items in one department. How do you investigate?

What to listen for: Reviewing records and procedures, checking receiving and security controls, treating staff fairly, and escalating through the proper process.

4. Sales are down and morale is low. Which one do you tackle first and why?

What to listen for: Understanding they are linked, talking with staff, quick wins in service or display, and a plan with measurable targets.

5. What would you do in your first 30 days in this store manager role?

What to listen for: Whether their plan is grounded in the role's actual must-haves (inventory management and staff scheduling and supervision) or generic ("get to know the team"). Specificity here signals real understanding of the job, not just interview prep.

6. Why are you leaving your current role, and why this one specifically?

What to listen for: Forward-looking motivation tied to something concrete about this role, versus badmouthing a past employer or vague dissatisfaction. Watch for whether their reasons actually match what this role offers.

Frequently asked questions

How many of these questions should I ask in one interview?

3-4 is realistic for a 30-45 minute interview once you leave room for follow-ups and the candidate's own questions. Divide competencies across panel members rather than every interviewer asking all of them — see the Interview Scorecard tool for a structured version of this.

How is this different from the Interview Scorecard tool?

This page is a generic starting point for the store manager role. The tool generates a full panel-ready kit — competency-grouped questions, a 1-5 rating rubric, and strong/weak answer examples — tailored to your actual job description and competencies.

The candidate blames staff or corporate for poor results and describes no way to coach, schedule, or motivate a team.

What should I confirm before offering a store manager the job?

Usually none. Confirm availability for weekends and holidays.
